Building Research Capacity in Cambodia

Thursday February 29, 2024

The North Carolina Peace Corps Association (NCPCA) is proud to announce its recent support of a transformative education project led by Peace Corps Volunteer Sam Terry-Edmunds through the Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP) grant.

The University of Management and Economics in Battambang, Cambodia, is home to one of the country’s three American Corners, serving as a resource for the community to access books, the internet, and insight to American history and culture. This space became the initial point of engagement for Sam, fostering meaningful relationships with the University and laying the foundation for a successful capacity-building project.

Following the receipt of project funding, two professors with strong backgrounds in research were recruited to deliver specialized training programs. Dr. Siek Darith, Deputy Director of the Regional Polytechnic Institute TechnoSen Battambang and former researcher at the Royal University of Agriculture, led the Research Methodology program. Dr. Hin Lyhour, a lecturer at the Royal University of Agriculture with extensive experience leading and contributing to research projects, was appointed to teach R programming.

The impact of these trainings was immediate and significant. The University established a new Research Center and successfully published two research articles in the International Journal of Research Publication and Reviews shortly after the program concluded. Moving forward, the University plans to utilize the new Research Center to strengthen its contribution to international education and research, helping shine light on Southeast Asia’s influence within the global academic community.
